The Writing Center according to researcher Andrea Lunsford is an “information station or storehouse, prescribing and handing our skills and strategies to individual learners”. Kean University’s Writing Center collaboration revolves around helping writers grow and confide in their work. Tutoring sessions are based on one-on-one discussions enhancing mutual communication and consultation of the writers’ work. Based on the social constructionist theory, the social language used within the session creates the communication between the tutor and writer.
The center is open to all students and faculty within the school. We are made up of a diverse ream of students; our center is able to work with various writing skills, from the ELL (English language learner) students to the graduate level experienced writer. The hierarchy of our center consists of peer tutors(graduate and undergraduate), academic specialists and faculty within the English writing department. The difference in staff is very useful in coaching and accomplishing all sorts of requirements needed out of the organized and the unorganized paper.
Our tutors acquire our skills through practice with our peers/ classmates, exploring ideas and being open to elaborating on the details of papers. Our center hopes to serve as an open minded and freely constructed tutoring center passing over our methods and expertise to individual graduate and undergraduate students.
We encourage all writers who are searching for new techniques and tactics to visit our center. The tutor and student work together in planning out their papers to help with their focus and clarity. Our mission is to help the everyday writer evolve in finding their own individual voice. Writer’s block is an act that takes part of the everyday writer and is an action we are proud to take part in patiently exercising and defeating. The center bases their knowledge on previous education and experience. Its mission is to succeed in accomplishing all the mysterious and unknown inquiries within a paper. Each paper is placed on a blank palette and turns into a furnished painting.
The tutors are not necessarily made up of only English writers but must have the English language mastered. The tutors study different majors within Kean University but are also powerful in their English writing and reading dexterity. Through extensive training, the tutors are able to perfect their mission in the Writing Center to fulfill the student’s needs proficiently.
